What to plant and when

Trying to grow pineapples in the Victorian Winter? Well thats probably not going to work is it? Follow through these simple guides to ensure you are planting the correct vegies in the correct season.

Spring Vegetables

Spring definitely is the time to get busy in the Vegetable Garden and take advantage of all the prep work you did over winter.

 

Once again, what you plant in the vegetable garden needs to be varied to suit your local conditions and tastes, but really, it's only the most temperature sensitive of plants that may need to wait a tad longer.

Autumn Vegetables

The jobs required in the vegetable garden in Autumn obviously vary depending on your climate, but as a Southerner, we are in a cool climate. This means relatively settled and quite sunny days with cool nights. Some areas will start to experience frosts which will spell the end of the warm season summer crops of plants such as corn, capsicums, chillies, tomatoes, cucumbers etc.

 

Autumn is the time to start planning out the crop rotation of your vegetable garden beds and to clear and prepare any beds of plantings from Summer.

Summer Vegetables

The Vegetable Garden in Summer is typically the most productive time of the year. For those of us in the cooler climates, its the time to get stuck into the warmer season crops that just won't grow well in Spring and Autumn. Even if you're in a warmer area, the best approach is to get most crops planted in early summer to ensure that they are established well enough to cope with the hotter temperatures. The key to success with most of the beds is consistent and even watering (allowing for weather variations), mulchingand good soil preparation.
